Hieroglyphic

A week of my own screen time, recorded by hand and carved into a hieroglyphic panel — seven columns of days, twelve rows of two-hour intervals, one glyph per activity.

Highlights

Logged my own activity for a full week by hand — the collecting was the project, not a step before it.

Nine activities came out of the week — messaging, music, mobile and PC games, video, trailers, scrolling, and the hours with nothing in them at all. Each got its own glyph, and the set became the alphabet.

Chose the oldest recording system there is to hold the newest possible data. Columns are days, Monday to Sunday; rows are two-hour blocks, midnight to midnight.

Plotted out, one week of ordinary screen time reads as a single dense inscription — and the repetition is the finding.

Inspiration

Made after Dear Data by Stefanie Posavec and Giorgia Lupi — a year of hand-drawn postcards trading data recorded from their everyday lives.
